January 2nd and school started up again this morning for our second-grader. Except that the air temperature outside was -28 at 7:45am (-43 with wind) and the car would not start. She was lucky enough to catch a ride with neighbors and make it to school on time. I've not been so lucky with my day to work at the quilt shop - even with AAA coming out to jump the car. It would not be jumped. Try us later in the day, the man said, when it warms up a little. By which I think he means, when the temperature reaches -15 or so.
I have felt a little like that car when I think about blogging. Needed a little more of a jump start than was available.
But here I am in the beginning of a new year. Perhaps that will bring the extra power needed to perk up a cold engine. After all, if my word of the year is going to be WRITE, then I'd better plan on it.
The flip side of my word, the ghost side, is both READ and RECORD. READ because I do want to read more this year, too, and because I believe you must read to write. You have to feed that machine. And RECORD because I want to keep track - of what I write, what I read, what I do and think and create, and what those around me are doing, too. Both these words I think of as being part of WRITE, of existing within and behind, in implication and in connotation.
My word for 2014 is a carpetbag word.
